International License vs. Thai License
This article begins with the usual disclaimer that laws in Thailand can change on a day to day basis and like every thing else here, depends where you go, who you see and what day of the week. The information provided is based on a consensus of personal experience.
An International Drivers License is not required for persons with driving licenses from the following countries: Singapore Malaysia Laos
If not, you are required to either have an International Driver's License (IDL) or else get a Thai driver's license to drive in Thailand, rent a car, or purchase car insurance (it depends on the insurance company). International Driver's Licenses expire much faster than most driver's licenses (1-3 years), so you may want to consider just getting and renewing a Thai driver's license rather than renewing your IDL overseas. A driver's license from another country is not officially recognized. It is sometimes accepted, but you always risk getting fined by the police or worse, getting held responsible in case of an auto accident.
Once you have been in Thailand for a period surpassing 3 months, you will need a Thai driving license, even though international drivers licenses are legally accepted. Several insurance companies have fine print stating that an auto driver should hold a valid Thai driving license to be fully covered. Besides that: You'll offer the local law enforcement great opportunities for moneymaking by continuing to drive a car with an international license.
A Thai license is very useful not only in your car. It is recognized as a weighty form of identification equal to your passport and my also help place blame in the case of an accident, where normally the “tourist” is held responsible. With a Thai license, you are no longer the tourist, but a recognized resident of Thailand. A domestic Thai drivers’ license can, sometimes, be used to avoid paying the typical farang prices. A Thai driver's license is then accepted as sort of proof that the holder is not a tourist. Having a Thai drivers’ license may sometimes also make police slightly more lenient towards the fact that expats cannot carry their passport at all times.
For insurance purposes, it is safer to hold a valid Thai drivers license. Insurance companies are always willing to accept your money, however, paying in the case of accident is a different story. There have been several cases in which insurance companies accept International license, but it depends on the time, place and people involved as everything in Thailand.
