Renting a Car or Motorbike in Thailand
This article begins with the usual disclaimer that laws in Thailand can change on a day to day basis and like every thing else here, depends where you go, who you see and what day of the week. The information provided is based on a consensus of personal experience.
Renting or Leasing a Car
Renting or leasing a car is the most common option, especially for people new to Thailand.
You will need a Thai or an international driver's license (discussed later in this section), and will have to hand over your passport or other substantive collateral before you can drive away with a rented car.
Depending on the company you rent from, you might find that the condition of the cars is often not the same as with car rental companies in western countries, but the price is lower, too. You get what you pay for.
Make sure the car is insured.
You should also check the car yourself, such as the brake fluid levels, tightness and condition of belts, engine oil, tires and pressure in the spare tire.
The company Q Cars has good English speaking staff, and an impressive website for Bangkok and Pattaya car rental and leasing. Q Cars has two convenient locations: one on Sukhumvit in Bangkok near the Thonglor skytrain station, and the other in Pattaya.
